Pets with Dr. Demirel

Mr. Akif Demirel is among our members in Istanbul. He wishes to share his experiences and views on "pets"

Akif Demirel, DVM
Born in Samsun in 1959. He is graduated from the Veterinary College of Istanbul University in 1982. After completion of military service he opened his small animal clinic in Yeşilköy. Several years after in 1988 he and his wife Filiz , who is also a veterinarian immigrated to Canada. Main purpose for this move was to improve their professional skills.

In 1991 Dr. Demirel passed all qualifying exams of t the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and became a fully licensed veterinarian. He obtained license to practice rights anywhere in Canada. He worked as an associate and solo owner of small and large animal practices during his stay in Canada. In 1993 he passed the American Veterinary Medical Association's qualifying exams and got rights to practice in the U.S. He obtained his Florida license the same year.

He worked at Airport Animal Hospital in Lakeland Florida as an associate veterinarian for a duration of one year and than VetSmart pet hospitals in Brandon , Florida which is the largest animal hospital corporation in the US .

He and his wife Filiz decided to move back to Turkey in 1996. They opened the Istanbul Veteriner Polikliniği doors in Florya to their clients in January 1996. Demirels have two boys named Burak Can and Boratay Erin.

I really appreciate these articles by Dr. Demirel. Would like to see one about how to deal with emergencies, such as small dog / cat biten by scorpion (a very real possibility where I live), and what to do if a dog is choking and no vet anywhere within 2 hrs travel?
