Arcades

Aynalı Pasaj, Beyoğlu
Before the development of department stores and shopping malls, pasajs (arcades) were the shopping centers of Turkish people. Some are located between the front and back entrances of a building while some cover all the stories of a building.

Books, ready-to-wear clothing, shoes, bags, gift, cosmetics, silver and gold ornaments can still be found on the stores of the pasaj scattered all around town. Furniture and durable goods are not sold in pasaj. Some pasaj have stores selling the same kind of products, such as Doğu Bank of Sirkeci where only appliances are sold or Akmar Pasajı of Kadıköy, the place to go for music and second-hand bookstores.

The most popular pasajs are: Aznavur and Atlas of Beyoğlu where you can also find odds and ends; Pilavcı, Gazi and Polat of Şişli, mostly specialize in daily wear and ornaments; Milli Reasürans of Nişantaşı, the pasaj of small elegant boutiques; Opera and Onur of Kadıköy, with moderate boutiques and silver ornaments; Kazım Kulan of Suadiye, a variety of small stores mostly selling silverware, silver and gold jewelry together with children's clothing; Gün and Marmara of Bakırköy, where leather bags and accessories are being sold.
