Breakfast at Tiffany's

8th Flying Broom International Women's Film Festival in Ankara

Flying Broom is a local women's NGO making TV and radio programmes, art exhibitions, public meetings, and projects for facilitating cooperation between NGO's and local governments. Their annual film festival arises from aestethic as well as political visions: Films can change the way we look at the world. They allow us to see things from the perspective of ‘the other', and they allow us to imagine what our lives could be like. But first and foremost, they're good entertainment! Here are some examples from this year's program.

Each has a different colour
In this section, 14 new feature films by female directors will be competing for the prestigious FIPRESCI Prize. FIPRESCI (The International Federation of Film Critics) visits Flying Broom's as the only women's film festival. This year, they will evaluate such films as the Israeli drama My Treasure, the English love story Yes, the Russian comedy You I love and the controversial Iranian 20 Fingers, which was banned in its own country. Also competing are Silent Waters from Pakistan and the French Look At Me, which won the Best Script Award at last year's film festival in Cannes.

Men in Love
This years' festival theme is love. On this occasion, the festival decided to include male directors in the program for the first time. In fact, all four features in the ‘Love' section were directed by men. Three of them are true classics: Breakfast at Tiffany's by Blake Edwards, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg by Jacques Demy and Fear Eats the Soul by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The last feature in the section is something of a scoop for the festival: Richard Linklater's Before Sunset (a new independent sequel to 1995's hugely succesful Before Sunrise) will not be shown in Turkish cinemas. This made it possible to include it in this year's festival. So if you're living in Turkey, this is your one-time chance to see this charming, intellectual love story on the big screen.

Short films, animations and documentaries
There are no limits to fiction, and these sections provide some highly entertaining examples. Here, you can find everything from a love story featuring a pregnant cowboy to the life story of Arthur Rimbaud told with handpuppets. You can visit a surrealistic Istanbul where everybody (men, women and children) has a moustache – or a fantastic film noir universe, where the no-nonsense detectives are women and the charming nightclub singers are men. Among the documentaries are The Naked Feminist (consisting of interviews with women working in the porn industry) and seven touching films from the True to Life project, where Israeli youths were provided with video cameras and professional assistance in order to tell their own story.

Other categories include ‘One country: Russia', Tribute: Laura Betti', ‘Cinema History: Alice Guy' and a special Greta Garbo section featuring the classics Ninotchka, Grand Hotel and Anna Karenina. Finally, don't miss the Agnieszka Holland retrospective. Agnieszka Holland is a highly original, poetic and political director, and the festival will be showing four of her films: Europe Europe, Total Eclipse, Olivier, Olivier, and Julie Walking Home.

The festival takes place on May 5-15 in two movie theatres in Ankara: Kavaklıdere and Kızılırmak. A catalogue with the full program can be found in the cinemas. For more information on the films, see the website given below.
