All major hotels have reputable coiffeur salons. Red&White at Mesa Plaza and Paris Kuaför at Kavaklıdere are among the most famous coiffeurs in Ankara. It is worth noting however, that paying more does not guarantee a better cut, or color for that matter. If you are new to Ankara and the salon scene, you would be best to seek the recommendation of a friend and go along with them to their salon where they can introduce you. You may get a better discount this way and most often, better service.
If you would like to have a little waxing here and there, than this is the place. Definitely check out the salon and the room where the waxing will be performed ahead of time to make sure it is hygienic and that you are comfortable with the arrangement. Waxing is quite customary in Turkey – half leg, full legs, arms, underarms, bikini, and full bikini. If you want to have your eyebrows or upper lip waxed you can ask, although most salons prefer to use tweezers for the eyebrows and thread (its neat – try it!) to remove other facial hair.
While the women are out having their fun at the salons, men too can enjoy a relaxing shave at the barber. Most barbers are clean and hygienic and it is such a wonderful tradition and custom of men in Turkey to make regular visits to their barber. As with women and their salons, men tend to be pretty loyal to their barber once they find one they particularly like. They still shave the men the old fashioned way, with a brush and foam first and then a clean (and brand new) blade for each customer. The blade is sterile, new, and disposed after each use so there is no need to worry about issues of hygiene. Each haircut and shave is typically followed with a vigorous head and neck massage, which is guaranteed to wake up even the sleepiest customer. Next a splash of lemon cologne and you are on your way.
