Istanbul Photography Museum

Photography finally has a home in Istanbul! Istanbul's first photography museum opened its doors on November 19, 2011. The museum which aims to support Turkish photography and contribute to it taking its place amidst world photography awaits its visitors in Kadırga.

Kadırga, a neighborhood which holds a special place in Istanbul's historical landscape and where palaces and select settlements existed during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, is home to Turkey's first photography museum.

The Museum was established as a result of collaboration with Fatih Municipality whom allocated the Museum's one thousand meter square building. The Museum, which has been photographers' dream for many years, is managed and administered by the Friends of Photography Association

The Museum hopes to bring to Istanbul a brand new cultural service by providing exhibitions, collections, publications, photography archives, electronic and standard libraries, activities, and educational projects to further develop the Turkish art of photography.

The museum have set off on our journey with both permanent and temporary five exhibitions. Undoubtedly, one of the most important duties a photography museum can have is to bring together, protect and promote the classics of the art of photography. That is the reason why, whilst the museum was being envisaged, one of its five galleries was set aside to be dedicated solely for our permanent İz Bırakanlar (Masters of Turkish Photography) exhibition. The rest of the galleries will host periodic exhibitions containing fine examples of Turkish and worldwide photography.
