In order to get married you have to apply to your district’s Municipality and start the necessary paperwork. Legal Marriages only can take place at the marriage offices of Municipalities.
Turkish men interested in polygamy (more than one wife) use a method called Imam Nikahı (religious marriage) which has no legal significance and is also forbidden by law. From time to time the government proclaims amnesty for the children born from such marriages in order to provide them the same rights as other legally born children. Women have no right of inheritance if the marriage is religious. Some pious families, for traditional reasons, have a religious marriage ceremony followed by a legal one.
