NEW Pet Travel Regulations for EU Countries
|
|
Beginning from October 1, 2004, new rules for the movement of pets to a EU
country from Turkey are in force. Here are the procedures you must fulfill before
traveling to a EU country
Your pet must:
* Be fitted with a microchip (except UK)
The microchip must confirm ISO 11784 / 85 standards
* Be vaccinated against rabies
* Be blood tested after at least 1 month following the rabies vaccination.
The blood test result must show that the vaccine has given your pet satisfactory
protection against rabies.
* Stay at least 3 months in Turkey after the blood test
Your pet cannot enter the EU (except UK) until three months after the date your vet took
a blood sample that yielded a successful test result. This is because an animal
that is infected before being vaccinated would not be protected against rabies
but its blood test might give the same result as one for an uninfected animal
that had been vaccinated. Three months is the time needed for an infected animal
to display any clinical signs of rabies, which would prevent it being brought
into the EU.
* Be issued with an official certificate.
This will be issued by an authorized vet of the agricultural ministry offices
of your region (Tarım İl Müdürlüğü). The transport company staff that will check
your pet will need to see this certificate so make sure it is kept safe. (Turkish
authorities still has no information regarding new type of EU published forms.
Most of the pets can travel without having these forms. We advise you o discuss
this situation with the related government authorities of destination country.)
6 months quarantine is applied in UK to all pets coming from Turkey, only rabbies vaccination will be enough to qualify the pet importation. Blood tests and microchip will be handled during their quarantine period.
Remember, if you start the procedures immediately your pet will be allowed to travel at least 3 months from the date of the blood sampling.
