Currency

Six zeroes were dropped from the Turkish Lira on January 1, 2005 and one million Turkish Lira in your wallet was equal to 1 Yeni Türk Lirası – YTL (New Turksih Lira). Beginning from January 1, 2009 the word “yeni” which was added to prevent confusion between the old and new Lira, was  removed and the Turkish lira reverted to its former name.

The now old New Turkish Lira (YTL) banknotes will be withdrawn from circulation as of January 1, 2010. However, the New Turkish Lira (YTL) banknotes will be redeemed for a period of ten years starting from January 1, 2010 until  the closure of working hours on December 31, 2019 at the branches of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey and Ziraat Bank. The New Turkish Lira (YTL) banknotes will be of no value as of January 1, 2020.

The exchange rates for foreign currencies are published daily. For updated information, please click Daily foreign currency rates of Turkish Central Bank site given below at "External Links" section.

SIXTEEN PERCENT INTEREST offered by Yapi Kredi on Turkish Lire One Month savings accounts is amazing. i.e. double your money in about 5 years! Compared to a British interest rate of about 4 or 5% and money tied up for at least one year. Cuneyt Ayhan of Side branch speaks good English and can assist.
